COAS Hosts Military High Command to One and a Half Year Thanksgiving at EPCG, La
The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, hosted the Military High Command to a one-and-a-half-year thanksgiving service at his church, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana (EPCG), North La, on Sunday 13 September 2026.
The service was held to give thanks to God for his protection and guidance of the Military Command for the past 18 months in office, and to deepen the bond between the Ghana Armed Forces and the Church.
The Parish Pastor, Rev Edem Adzaku, welcomed the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lt Gen William Agyapong; the COAS, Maj Gen Gbetanu; the Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing; the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong, and other Generals, Senior Officers and soldiers to the church for the occasion.
Preaching on the theme “Forgiven to Forgive”, taken from Matthew 18:21-30, Rev Adzaku said forgiveness is not a feeling but a decision. He reminded the congregation of Jesus’ charge to forgive “not seven times, but seventy-seven times”, meaning an unlimited number of times. He urged believers to forgive generously without keeping count, remembering how much God has forgiven them, and not to allow bitterness to take root in their hearts. He ended the sermon with Romans 14:1-14, encouraging Christians to handle differences with love, humility, patience and mutual respect and to avoid judging one another.
In his remarks, Maj Gen Gbetanu thanked the Military High Command, serving officers and soldiers, church leaders and members for their support, and commended the Army Wives Association for joining in the celebration. He prayed for God’s blessings for all and pledged to support the completion of the church building project.
A former Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia, Maj Gen Carl Setorwu Modey (Rtd), lauded the COAS for supporting the church project and prayed for God’s protection and guidance for him and the entire Ghana Armed Forces.
As a symbol of appreciation, the church leadership, led by Rev Adzaku, presented a framed portrait to the COAS.
